The Beginning: 1930

The first ever FIFA World Cup took place in 1930, hosted and won by Uruguay. It changed the landscape of international sports forever. In 1930, only 13 teams participated. Now, in 2026 it has expanded from 32 to 48 teams that will be participating for the first time. Every four years the World Cup is hosted in different countries.
